“You have to treat different people in a different way if you want to draw out the best in them. For example, you may have to invite a player out for dinner outside of the work environment, or have a talk with them in your office. With another you may have to avoid any kind of conversation about tactics or the opponent; with another still you must always talk about what he does in his free time, and so on and so forth. That’s fascinating about my job. For each of them I have to think what I should say to them, do to them, in the end, how to deceive them, in a way, or seduce them into giving you the best they’ve got. And not because coaches are above them, or better, no. Because we’re beneath them in the sense that we depend on them completely. So we have to “deceive” them into doing their best so that we can reach a certain aim or objective. Sure, we must have vision, imagine the game, dream how it will play out, but then we have to be able to communicate with the players so that we get them to understand what we want them to do. With some, it’s perfectly okay to point out what went wrong in front of the whole group, with others you cannot dare to say the slightest thing in front of other players because they’ll be offended and their performance will drop.” Pep Guardiola
